HyWest Meets H2Alpin and H2CoVE: Driver Training

Austria’s one and only Hyundai XCIENT hydrogen truck was powered and provided by Green Energy Center Europe Codex Partners Ewald Perwög and Thomas Thaler, Chiefs of JuVe AutoMotion GmbH and Roland Punzengruber, CEO of Hyundai Austria. After being delivered in September 2024, the hydrogen truck was set up by EMPL Fahrzeugwerk and is now ready for operation by MPREIS.

Following this key milestone, a training workshop was held on 13 May 2025 at Green Energy Center Europe in Innsbruck and MPREIS Hydrogen in Völs, attended by truck drivers from the Tyrolean food retailer. Nikolaus Fleischhacker, CEO of FEN Sustain Systems GmbH and Alexander Kosinski, Head of Service of Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility, jointly conducted this workshop.

Topics covered included an introduction to hydrogen and in particular fuel cell and high voltage technology, hydrogen and high voltage safety measures, and hydrogen refuelling processes. The upskilling course materials, jointly presented with the regional industries, provide a solid foundation for the further development of vocational education programmes in the Tyrol region, which are currently being prepared within the H2CoVE Erasmus+ project.

The training concluded with a practical session in which the drivers gained hands-on experience with the Hyundai XCIENT hydrogen truck, which will soon be operational as part of the KLIEN projects WIVA P&G HyWest and H2Alpin.

The “WIVA P&G HyWest” project is a € 23 million flagship research initiative aiming to establish a green hydrogen economy in Central Europe, with MPREIS’s efforts serving as a pioneering example. By integrating hydrogen technology into its logistics, MPREIS is demonstrating its commitment to sustainable practices, positioning itself at the forefront of Austria’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
